Minnesota/US – Chatfield Freemasons Donate Fire Suppression Devices

The Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office recently received a donation of three life-saving fire suppression devices from the Chatfield Masonic Lodge and the Freemasons. “It can make a dramatic difference in a house fire,” stated Scott Oesterlin, member of the Chatfield Masonic Lodge (Meridian Lodge No. 25), who spearheaded the project. Oesterlin presented the devices to Fillmore County Deputy Jesse Grabau on December 20, 2023, at the Chatfield City Hall. Together with three devices previously donated to the city of Chatfield, there are now six devices in Fillmore County. The approximate cost of each device is $1,000. The costs are shared between the local Masonic lodge, Minnesota Masonic Charities and The Grand Lodge, with each paying one-third of the cost. “If it saves one life in the next 15 years, it’s well worth it,” commented Oesterlin. Oxfordshire/England – Freemason commended for half century of service

A Man from Henley has been commended for achieving 50 years of service with the Freemasons. John Grout, 90, of Upton Close, was presented with a certificate by the Very Worshipful Brother Graham Ellis, deputy provincial grand master in Craft, during a meeting of Thames Mark Lodge in Henley. The Oxfordshire provincial grand masters of craft and mark said they were delighted the presentation could be made at the meeting of Thames Lodge of mark master masons. Mr Ellis spoke of Mr Grout’s “quiet but purposeful” efforts in charity fundraising, including work on behalf of the Oxfordshire Craft Festival and the Mark Benevolent Fund Annual Festival, which will take place in Oxfordshire in 2025. South Australia – Plans lodged for Adelaide’s tallest building

Plans for a 37-storey, 183-metre tower and hotel behind the state heritage listed Freemasons Hall have been lodged, with hopes the North Terrace skyscraper will incorporate a new museum of South Australian history by 2026. The Freemasons Hall Trust lodged a development application on October 30 for its long-mooted “Keystone Tower” behind the Freemasons Hall on North Terrace, with the plan listed on the public developments register this month. The project, worth an estimated $400 million, features a 240-room hotel, office space, business lounge, function area, “wellness centre” and a top level balcony. England – Freemasons lose £2.8m VAT case

The oldest Grand Lodge of Freemasons in the world has lost an appeal for VAT refunds of £2.83m for charges on membership fees as primary aim was not philanthropic The Grand Lodge has an annual income of approximately £13m, with £9m of this coming from membership fees and room rental. The two claims related to 2014 and 2018 and totalled £2.83m in VAT refunds from membership fees. As the largest representative body of freemasonry in the UK with 175,000 members, the Grand Lodge, which was founded in 1717, has net assets of £70m and employs 90 people, operating as a not-for-profit organisation. Originally, the Grand Lodge appealed to the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) claiming that the organisation was exempt from the VAT charges under Article 132(1)(1) of Council Directive 2006/112/VAT (PVD). This exemption is applied to organisations whose aims consist of a philosophical, philanthropic or civic nature.
